The Story Behind Wilks Ranches

TWilks Ranch is a top-of-the line cattle operation boasting continued success as both commercial and registered AAA producers. Owned by the Wilks brothers, Dan and Farris, Wilks Ranch has made a name for themselves based on their unmatched cattle performance and pristine genetics.

From the beginning, the Wilks brothers learned the importance of hard work from their father. They knew the value of vision and persistence, and of building a firm foundation for their future. Starting in the cattle business in their Cisco, Texas, home, they expanded a small family farm and a few head of black angus cattle to the immense holdings Wilks Ranches employs today.

Seeking to improve their commercial ranches, the brothers established a registered seed stock operation in 2013. Wilks proudly began to provide bulls and cows for commercial and seed stock cattlemen, and realized they could do a great deal to improve genetics and strengthen Black Angus herds throughout the country. Since then, registered black angus beef have become the cornerstone of what truly defines the Wilks Ranch.

Just south of the county seat, Eastland, TX, is home to the high quality registered Black Angus breeding program; one of the things that Wilks Ranch is known for. Wilks Ranch prides itself in consistently running approximately 1000 head of the highest quality registered cattle- supplying the country with cattle whose traits showcase the forefront of breeding and genetic superiority. In addition to cattle sales, Wilks also offers their proven genetics of its top sires and dams available through AI, embryo transfer or in-vitro fertilization. Additionally, with commercial ranches in Montana, Idaho, and Oregon, Wilks Ranch is confident in our progeny’s ability to perform regardless of climate, in addition to improving structural soundness and adding a sustainable value with each calf crop.

As producers, we strive to improve our programs parentage by refining phenotypic and genotypic traits. Wilks Ranch is proud to looking one step further and keep the end product in mind by constantly working towards producing a superior product for our consumers, along with our fellow producers. We are persistent about improving our own genetics and progeny grading scores by adding impeccable sires to our herd. One in particular that we are proud to highlight, is HA Cowboy Up 5405.

Wilks Ranch, along with Express Ranches and our associate owners, purchased this bull to add more body, power, and performance back into our program. HA Cowboy Up 5405 has been noted as one of the best bulls in the business based on his leg and foot confirmation, and was the widest based, longest spined, and biggest bodied yearling to sell in America in 2016. Not only is this bull exceptional phenotypically, but he also provides an extremely competitive carcass on the rail. Cowboy Up’s tenderness is unmatched, scoring 1 out of 100 for tenderness with the 50K DNA test. These scores have ranked Cowboy Up in the top 1% of the breed for tenderness, which undeniably confirms why his progeny are selling themselves on the grid.

As forward-thinking producers, we believe that it is our duty to consistently improve our programs genetics by producing the highest quality progeny possible. In turn, these improvements will implement a sustainable value to your herd by improving genetics that will result in increased production, higher quality performance, and overall improved customer satisfaction. As a top-quality Black Angus seedstock operation, we pride ourselves in providing traits that are beneficial to both our fellow ranchers and our consumers.

With genetics that have been proven through continued performance, progeny growth, and successful grading on the rail, Wilks Ranch is proud to serve as your choice seedstock operation. We assure our customers the highest quality of genetics available in order to assist in advancing your herd’s form, function, and balance.
